Welcome to Highland Elementary School, Special Education kindergarten thru 4th grade. This is my 9th year in education, but my first year at Highland. I am looking forward to working with your child and becoming a part of the Highland Elementary School family. While in the Special Education classroom, your student will be receiving small group and one-on-one instruction in reading, math and writing, depending on your student's needs. For reading, most students will be working in Reading Mastery Signature Edition. This is a research-based phonics based Direct Instruction reading program that was developed for intervention learning that teaches all lessons to mastery prior to moving on. Students in this program will be learning the sounds to letters, blends and diagraphs prior to learning letter names.
In math, all students will be working at their skill level in a small group or one-on-one learning environment. This individual instruction will provide foundational math skills prior to building up to grade level content. Students, though in the same grade level, may be working on different concepts and skills. Math concepts that may be covered in any grade levels include addition, subtraction, money, time, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percents.
When I am not teaching, my husband and I enjoy numerous outdoor activities including camping, hiking, backpacking, mountiain biking and rock climbing.
